Former Chief Minister Mayawati – The Success of Dr. Ambedkar’s Constitution

3rd June 1995, Behenji became the first time Chief Minister of India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh. The day has been celebrated as सामाजिक परिवर्तन दिवस (social reform day). For the first time a Bahujan woman, an SC, became the chief minister in India breaking all Barriers of Brahmanism, Brahminical Patriarchy and Neo- Kshatriya forces. It was said a miracle of democracy, the success of Dr. Ambedkar’s constitution.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar wanted social-democratic change in India’s politics after independence. For which his demand was a separate electorate for the Bahujans, which unfortunately he couldn’t get due to the forceful Poona pact by Gandhi and his fast-undo-death. Dr. Ambedkar always had the fear that his people would be used as tokens and stooges due to it.

Later, Dr. Ambedkar’s idea of India was the constitution of India based on Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. And he made India the world’s largest democratic country. But he said, “however good a constitution maybe if those who are implementing it are not good, it will prove to be bad.” The reason, India needed a social-democratic change in its politics (which was dominated by the caste Hindus [Dwijs]).

After that Dr. Ambedkar started his political and religious movement altogether in parallel. Unfortunately, the mission remained incomplete due to the sudden death of Dr. Ambedkar.

Thereafter, there was a gap, a slow down of Ambedkarite both political and social movement. Until the 1970s, When Manyavar Saheb Kanshiram and Behen Mayawati entered into social-political movement with BAMCEF, later DS4, and finally BSP. Kanshiram always used to say that, our party’s manifesto would be the constitution of India when we come into power. Our foremost goal would be to implement the constitution of India. When BSP became the ruling party in UP and the national party in India, it was for the first time we saw a sense of equality, inclusivity and democracy in India’s politics. Mayawati’s mere existence was revolutionary and success of the constitution, and its values. It broke the hegemony of caste Hindus and exposed the Chamcha (Stooge) age in Indian politics. Kanshi Ram wrote a book named “The Chamcha Age” and tried to express the consciousness of Dr. Ambedkar about Indian politics and Bahujans in detail.

This success had a struggle of DS4, BAMCEF, Buddhist Ambedkarite movement, Satya Shodhak Samaj movement, and endless efforts of ages in even before. After the Ambedkarite movement under the leadership of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Manyavar KanshiRam took the caravan ahead with Behen Mayawati. A number of cadre camps, cycle rallies were organized and millions contributed with time, treasure, and talent.

“When I was not a CM, I had the responsibility of Bahujan samaj, but today as a CM I hold the responsibility Sarvajan Samaj.” One of the popular statements of Mayawati after she became CM in 1995. Mayawati and BSP’s core value is the constitutional spirit – liberty, equality and fraternity. Seeing every individual as just irrespective of caste, religion, gender, etc.
