How the finding at Keezhadi in Tamil Nadu changed the course of Indian history

Indus Valley Civilisation is one of the oldest civilisation. Though it is called Indus Valley civilisation, the name is a misnomer as today the spread and extent of this civilisation are far away from the sites of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. Now it appears that this was the largest and the most advanced civilisation. Still, less is known about it. The finding at Keezhadi in Tamil Nadu indicates that this was inhabited by the people who shared a language with people living in the Indus valley. It is now proved that the people in the Indus Valley shared the same genetic stock as the people in South India.

This has great implications for India. It has been established that the Aryan is not a physical pure race as no race is pure. We are all mixed and we can trace our origin to the Great mother in Africa. However, the cultural race is important to understand as a certain group live by certain ideologies and certain philosophies that give rise to a particular culture and that particular culture becomes the identity of the people born into that social milieu.

As more history is becoming clearer, the manipulation of it by those who had a chance to write it is becoming clear. History has the potential to create powerful communities. As has been demonstrated by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Varna system was unknown to the people living in ancient India. Indus Valley Civilisation was not based on the fourfold varna system. Even in South India, only two varnas are dominant: Brahmin and Shudras. The Varna system was the myth created to make a majority believe in some hierarchy.

The finding suggests that the vast majority of Indians are the original inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent. They had a grand civilisation having strong urban centres. Their civilisation did not end, it got transformed as everything else does. It still survives in the transformed form.

The history as a study is the phenomenon of the last few centuries and no one can say that there is one generalised history. There are many histories perhaps as many groups and individuals.

The finding at Keezhadi indicates that now it is the time to throw away the history of Brahmins as it is sold to Indians as the grand narrative. It is time to begin to stress the real history of the majority of Indians. And this is based on facts and pieces of evidence unlike the Brahnmical myths sold as histories!
