Babasaheb Ambedkar and His Significance to Liberation of Women in India

The role of Babasaheb Ambedkar in uplifting women in India is very vital. He is mostly reduced to the emancipator of the SCs by the Brahminical propaganda, but his role in the emancipation of women from all communities is very important. It is true that he worked for the upliftment of Dalit women. He started organising them from the very early and in fact he brought them to a leadership level till 1942 when the All India Scheduled Castes Women’s Federation became vital to the movement of liberation. In this conference, the women organised the conference taking full control of resolutions, speeches, and the proceedings. It is fascinating to read the proceedings of this conference to see how SC women came to lead their communities.

While he is known for his contribution to the liberation of Dalit women, his contribution to the liberation of women from all the communities is not known and not talked about. He was the first researcher to document to the atrocious effect of the caste system on the so-called women from the higher castes. He theorised the plights of the women from the so-called higher caste in the formation of the caste system.

But his remarkable contribution came through the bill he drafted and came to be known as Hindu Code Bill. This bill was not passed when he was the law minister because of the conservatism of the Congress party. However, the bill got passed in four bills that gave rights to all the women to inherit the property of their parents and equal status in marriage.
