Political Will and Violence – When Mayawati Government Stopped VHP From ‘Second Ayodhya’ at Mathura in 1995

I blame Mamta Banerjee and Nitish Kumar for the violence during the Ram Navami in West Bengal and Bihar. Many people have lost their lives during the Ram Navami violence in both the states. If they had the will to stop the violence they could have done that easily but for them maybe instability and violence bring fruit.

On 3 June 1995, Mayawati became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time with the support of BJP.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad, an allied Hindu nationalist organization of BJP, thinking that now BJP is sharing power with BSP started mobilising Hindus for the what it was called ‘Second Ayodhya’ movement at Mathura.

In September VHP planned to celebrate Krishna’s birthday (Janamashthami) at Mathura. VHP claimed a site at Mathura as Krishna’s birthplace and where stands a mosque. VHP’s intention was clear, to repeat Ayodhya incident where Babri Masjid was brought down by its activists. VHP’s plan was to bring thousands and thousands of Hindus from all over India to Mathura during Janamashthami and do the same as they did in Ayodhya.

Mayawati government intervened to prevent the mobilization and averted communal violence. BJP and VHP tried to threaten Mayawati government that BJP will withdraw its support if they are not allowed to carry out their program.

Mayawati and BSP didn’t care about whether government survives or not but stopped VHP leaders from possible riots and killings. Mayawati allowed the VHP’s function to take place provided that it was held more than 3km away from the mosque, where only 1000 or so people could gather. This plan worked smoothly, and no Hindu-Muslim riot broke out.

Later, Krishna Janmabhoomi issue was mentioned by BJP while withdrawing support from the Mayawati’s government in October 1995.

Mayawati’s first term as CM lasted for 136 days but she left an unforgettable impression not only on Muslims but also on everyone else with her strict law and order.

If Mayawati government could stop the violence of VHP and BJP while her government was dependent on the support of BJP, why couldn’t Mamta Banerjee and Nitish Kumar, considering Mamta Banerjee’s government isn’t even dependent on BJP?

Indeed an excellent ,bold and free minded action on the part of Mayawati inspite of the fact / threat that her govt depending on the support of BJP would be destabilised. Hatsoff to Mayavatyi.Let us hope that the people of UP will bring back to the saddle in the 2019 elections.
