Climate Change and Caste

In the recent flood in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, 1200 people got killed and millions got displaced. The rise in global temperature increases the capacity of the air to hold and carry more water resulting in higher rainfall.

The flood affected region is one of the poorest regions in the world. It included Bihar which saw many casualties and destruction of wealth.

Most of the people who died are the poor and the lower caste who live in the shanty and kuccha houses. The death toll due to flood is an indication of things to come in the future. The most affected communities due to climate change and its effects will be the lower caste poor.

India is one the major recipient of the funds that are donated in the climate change area. But, it is clear that the RSS/BJP government has no policy to take into account the effect of climate change on different caste demography. In the absence such a policy, it is difficult to go for targeted relief and rehabilitation work.
