In the Land of Periyar, To Protest against Brahminism, Dravidian Outfit to Make Pig Wear Janeu
In the land of Periyar, Tamil Nadu, a revolutionary step has been taken by the Dravidian outfit, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK). It is organising an event on 7th August where pigs will be adorned with Janeu (poonool as it is called by Tamil Brahmins) as a symbol of protest against Brahminism.
“The poonool turns a Parappan into a Brahmin and a Tamilian into a Shudhran” – This startling message is embossed on a poster that carries the image of a pig wearing the ‘sacred thread’(Janeu).
Last year, the TPDK burnt effigies of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana during Ram Leela to symbolically show opposition to ‘Aryan invasion’, reports TheNewsMinute.
‘Panrikku Poonool podum porattum’, a protest where pigs will be made to wear Janeu will be held at the Sanskrit College in Chennai. 7th August is picked to protest because the day marks Avani Avittam, a sacred day for the Brahmins in Tamil Nadu. Avani Avittam is a day when Brahmins change their sacred thread, Janeu, once in a year. Hence to protest against the superiority promoted by Brahmins, 7th August, the day of Avani Avittam is picked by TPDK.
Brahmins wear Janeu to show superiority among other castes and pig is viewed as dirty and society doesn’t compare it to insult so pig was picked by the organisers to make wear Janeu.
With BJP/RSS in power and their attempts to promote Brahminism is visible all over India with bringing Brahmins on all the top posts, promoting the killing of Dalits and minority communities on the name of cow-protection there is need to protest.
It is a high time that so-called Brahmins leave aside their ideas of superiority and start accepting equality granted by the Constitution. We believe such events as making wear Pigs Janeu will make Brahmins think over their practices and make them change their ways of dominance.
Wish there were Periyar movement in the North India also to fight against the Brahminism!

Comparing any social group to animals is a form of dehumanisation and is a human rights abuse. The Ashkenazi Jews were compared to rats by the Nazis. The Tutsi were compared to cockroaches by the Hutus. Now, TPDK is comparing Tamil Brahmins to pigs. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.
