If we look at the constitutional history of India starting from 1917 when it was declared that the right to demand self-governance by the Indians will not be considered as seditious and that progressively self-governance will be bestowed upon the Indians, Babasaheb Ambedkar played the biggest and the most important role in making democratic India. Making India a democracy, a people’s republic is more important than snatching political power for individual political parties then existing in India like Indian National Congress (INC) and Muslim League (ML), and a host of other political parties existed them.

If it was not for the erudition, commitment and greater wisdom and understanding of Babasaheb Ambedkar, India would have become a Ram Rajya and not a democracy. Pick up any debate, interventions, conferences during those decades, it was Babasaheb Ambedkar who is talking about democracy and adult franchise and rights for all. Gandhi was talking of keeping the decision making at the hands of princes (and India had more than 550 princely states then), Babasaheb Ambedkar was giving power to the people of the state. The efforts of Babasaheb Ambedkar in this regard is paramount important for India.

Babasaheb Ambedkar not only helped to design the political system for this country that will best suit the situation of India but also he advocated and worked for creating a social and economic system that will suit all. Hence he went fully against the caste-based social order and the system that only benefits the handful of Brahmins and Banias and keep millions of the majority classes out it.

This is perhaps the great significance to India that he set for himself to destroy the caste system and encouraged and inspired millions to commit to the destruction of the caste system. The much inquiry into his role of developing India economically is coming into fore indicating what Babasaheb did for the economic development of India. Much can be written about it.
